Former Tarlac governor Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco would rather be in another country than the Philippines if her niece, Kris Aquino, is elected into office in 2016.
Asked at a forum last week what she would do should Kris win in the election, Cojuangco said in jest: “I’ll just leave the country.”
The 70-year-old former politician, who has been vocal about her wish for her nephew and Kris’ brother, President Benigno Aquino III to step down, said she does not plan on running for a gubernatorial post to avoid competition against Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) founder and president, businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., who had backed other candidates in the province in previous elections.
“They want to control us but we don’t want to be controlled,” she said.
Over the weekend, Aquino denied speculations she will run for public office in 2016, saying she wants to focus on her family.
She said she also wants to support her brother after he steps down from his post since he’ll likely face a barrage of cases when his immunity from suit ends.
