Tinio: Diokno ‘recycled’ to BSP post to shield him from pork questions
ACT Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio on Tuesday slammed the appointment of Budget Secretary Ben Diokno as the new Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas governor, saying it was a way to protect him from accusations about his meddling with the national budget.
“Pres. Duterte continues his abominable practice of shielding his appointees from public accountability by recycling them to other posts,” the Makabayan congressman said in a statement.
“DBM Sec. Diokno has been rewarded with one of the most powerful economic positions in government, notwithstanding the fact that an ongoing congressional investigation has uncovered his role in tampering with the proposed 2019 public works budget, inserting P75 billion worth of projects to favor certain contractors, including his relatives,” Tinio said.
He warned that Diokno would continue to be hounded by questions concerning the P3.757-trillion budget for 2019.
“Despite styling himself as a budget reformer, these questions will continue to hound Diokno for as long as he fails to account for his role in the so-called flood control scam,” Tinio said.
“As DBM Secretary, he consistently opposed the granting of substantial salary increases to civilian government personnel, public school teachers in particular, despite pronouncements made by Pres. Duterte himself,” he said.
“We hope that whoever replaces him will be more willing and able to fulfill Duterte’s promise,” Tinio added.
