Trabaho lang! Coast Guard to appeal officers’ homicide conviction over Taiwanese fishermen’s death
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to appeal before the Court of Appeals (CA) the conviction of eight of personnel over the 2013 killing of a Taiwanese fisherman in Balingtang Channel off the waters of Batanes.
“Naniniwala kami that they just did their duty defending our territorial integrity,” said PCG spokesman Capt. Armand Balilo.
Lawyer Rodrigo Moreno, the counsel of those convicted, pointed out the judgment is not yet final.
“We would file a notice of appeal at the CA,” he said.
“We don’t agree with the finding so we would exhaust the process,” he added.
Recently, Manila Judge Eduardo Ramon Reyes convicted the eight PCG personnel of homicide for the killing of Hong Shi Cheng.
Those convicted are Coast Guard Cmdr. Arnold dela Cruz, Seaman Second Class 2 Nicky Aurelio, and Seamen First Class Edrando Aguila, Mhelvyn Bendo II, Andy Gibb Golfo, Sonny Masangkay, Henry Solomon and PO2 Richard Corpuz.
The fisherman was part of the crew of a Taiwanese fishing vessel which was spotted by the PCG within Philippine territorial waters.
