Trillanes: Free Leila, she will be a ‘great leader’

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV joined calls to drop the drug charges against Senator Leila de Lima and free her from detention.
Trillanes said he will deliver a privilege speech on De Lima’s plight next Wednesday (February 21) — three days before the senator marks one year in jail in Camp Crame over charges stemming from allegations that she had a hand in the illegal drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison.
“Ibabalik ko lang ulit sa national consciousness ‘yung injustice na ginawa kay Senator De Lima dahil isang taon, mabilis dumaan nakapiit siya nang wala naman siyang ginawang krimen,” Trillanes said in a chance interview at the sidelines of the launch of the “Buwan ng Leila,” commemorating the senator’s first year in detention.
“Lahat po ng in-allege sa kanya ay lahat ito ay gawa-gawa lang ng mga alipores ni Duterte at ‘yun na ang nakakalungkot,” Trillanes said.
Trillanes said he is hopeful that De Lima will be released if “Duterte is gone.”
“Kung maunang mawala ‘to si Duterte, makakalaya kaagad si Senator De Lima. Isa rin ‘yang ginagawa natin,” Trillanes said.
Speaking to supporters of De Lima in the Senate on Valentine’s Day, Trillanes said, “Mark me, Senator De Lima will rise again and would become a great leader of this country.”
The Human Rights Watch, also a staunch critic of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, also called for the release of De Lima from detention.
There are three cases filed against De Lima in separate Muntinlupa courts, charging her with conspiracy to trade drugs.
