US President Donald Trump said news outlets should apologize and warned those who leaked information to the media.
He tweeted on February 16, “Leaking, and even illegal classified leaking, has been a big problem in Washington for years. Failing @nytimes (and others) must apologize!”
Trump then tweeted that those who leaked information “will be caught.”
In an earlier tweet, he accused the intelligence community of “illegally” giving information to the media.
This was after the New York Times reported that “in the year before the election,” Trump campaign aides and other associates had “repeated contacts” with Russian intelligence officials.
The report cited four incumbent and former US officials, who were unnamed, as sources.
Trump also tweeted earlier that “the real story” is why there are “many illegal leaks coming out of Washington,” after Michael Flynn quit his post as national security adviser.
Flynn resigned after reports that he misled administration officials regarding his conversations with Russian envoy to the US Sergey Kislyak.
