Tumaya sa kandidato: Cayetano vows to expose ABS-CBN executives’ meddling in last two presidential polls
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has vowed to expose the alleged partisan political activities of embattled broadcast giant ABS-CBN during the past national elections.
Cayetano made the remarks during a press conference on Monday in reaction to the statement made by ABS-CBN President Carlo Lopez Katigbak that the Lopez-owned media conglomerate “does not and will not have its own political agenda.”
Cayetano said although he was satisfied with some of Katigbak’s pronouncement during the hearing of the Senate committee on public services after issuing an apology to President Rodrigo Duterte, “there are still a lot of facts that will come out later that will show that there were some lapses” committed by the management of the Kapamilya network.
The House leader stressed he has evidence to show that ABS-CBN executives have operated and favored some political candidates, especially during the 2010 and 2016 presidential elections.
He said he will reveal such proof in the proper time, once the House committee on legislative franchise finally starts to hear the 11 proposed legislations that seek to grant the Lopez firm a fresh 25-year congressional franchise.
“There are still a lots of facts that will come out later on that will show that there were some lapses at the very mildness or at worst na tumaya talaga ang ABS-CBN management for some candidates, we have their evidence for that,” said Cayetano.
After six years of being delayed, the House committee on legislative franchise on Monday formally opened the proceedings in connection with the franchise renewal of the Kapamilya network.
Cayetano maintained that ABS-CBN franchise renewal remains “important but not urgent” but gave and assurance that the Lopez firm will be allowed with their continuous operations while their franchise renewal application remains pending before the legislative franchise panel.
The Taguig-Pateros solon earlier this month stressed the supposed coverage bias shown by the Kapamilya network during 2010 and 2016 presidential elections in favor of certain candidates are big issues that need to be addressed by the Lopez family and network executives, which can affect the status of its pending franchise renewal bills at the House of Representatives.
Cayetano, Duterte’s running mate in the 2016 polls, has accused the Lopez network of giving VIP treatment to certain national candidates during the last presidential elections.
“There’s an allegation, it has to be heard and we can work it out through the committees, through a sober discussion,” said Cayetano.
