President Rodrigo Duterte does not want to renegotiate the Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States (US), his spokesman said on Thursday.

“Hindi siya open. Hindi nga siya open na tayo ay pumasok sa mga military agreements sa ibang bansa e,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in an interview with dzMM.

Panelo said the Philippines cannot forever rely on another nation for strengthening the military defense.

“Kasi nga sinasabi niya hindi pupwedeng forever tayong naka-[rely], umaasa tayo sa ibang bansa sa ating depensa. Kailangan palakasin natin ang ating depensa (at) resources natin. Tumayo na tayong mag-isa,” he added.

Duterte ordered the termination of the two-decade long military agreement with US in January, following the cancellation of Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa’s visa.
