THE United States (US) had no hand whatsoever in the disastrous Mamasapano, Maguindanao siege last January 25 that led to the death of 44 Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) commandos.
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary for Policy Evan Garcia relayed this information to senators Monday as the Chamber resumed its investigation on the Mamasapano clash.
“We have confirmed with the US embassy that there was no US involvement in the operation. It was 100 percent Filipino-planned and executed,” said Garcia, who attended the Senate Committee on Public Order hearing in lieu of DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario.
Garcia said that Del Rosario gained the information from the US ambassador. The denial of American involvement in the bloody clash last month came amid reports on the sightings of “drones” in Mamasapano before and after the SAF mission and a “caucasian” among the many casualties of the skirmish.
” I want to know if DFA was appraised of situation on the ground,” panel chair Senator Grace Poe asked Garcia, who answered in the negative.
” We had no info provided to us,” the DFA official said.
The secret police operation targeted the arrest of Malaysian Zulkifli Bin Hir alias “Marwan” and his Filipino understudy, Basit Usman. Marwan, the terrorist responsible for the 2002 Bali bombing, is also wanted by the US government. (Randy K. Ortega)
