US senator to PH gov’t: Release De Lima now
By Prince Golez
A United States (US) senator has called for the release of Senator Leila de Lima from detention.
In a Twitter post last September 21, US Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said de Lima continues to be detained over what he called as “bogus charges.”
“Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, a critic of extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s so-called ‘war on drugs’, has spent the last two years in prison on bogus charges. I call on the Philippine government to unconditionally release her #FreeLeilaNow #ExpressionNOTOppression,” Rubio’s tweet said.
In April, Rubio was among the five American senators who called for de Lima’s release and the dropping of charges against Rappler founder Maria Ressa.
De Lima, also former justice secretary, is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center on drug charges.
