Uunahan na Kamara! Poe seeks probe into ABS-CBN’s franchise
With the House of Representatives dragging its feet on hearing ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid, Senator Grace Poe is stepping in by launching an investigation into the network’s compliance with the terms of its franchise.
Poe on Wednesday (February 12) filed Senate Resolution 322 directing the Senate committee on public services to look into ABS-CBN’s operations.
The senator, who chairs the committee that will handle the investigation, said the hearing will give network executives and other parties to air their side on the issues facing ABS-CBN.
She said the investigation is part of Senate’s oversight function over any franchise, not just ABS-CBN.
“Due to the gravity of the allegations and its possible effects, the Committee has deemed it appropriate to lay the groundwork for a possible inquiry in the spirit of public interest,” Poe said in a statement.
The senator said the Senate hearing does not preclude any action in the House or the Supreme Court. Earlier this week, Solicitor General Jose Calida filed before the tribunal a quo warranto petition seeking to revoke ABS-CBN’s existing franchise.
The House committee on legislative franchises has yet to schedule a hearing on the bills granting ABS-CBN a new, 25-year franchise.
Congress will hold its last session day on March 11 while ABS-CBN’s franchise will expire on March 30.
