Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco apologized Friday (October 2) to President Rodrigo Duterte and the public over the stunts pulled off by House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and his allies in a bid to shelve the term sharing agreement.
In a six-minute video posted on Facebook, Velasco said the public doesn’t deserve what lawmakers have been doing in recent days.
“Humihingi po tayo ng paumanhin kay Pangulong Duterte sa mga pangyayari sa kabila ng buong-pusong pag-aayos niya sa gusot,” he said.
“Nakakahiya ang mga nangyayari- we are congressmen. We are called Honorables. Our Word is our Honor. The people should be able to trust their leaders when they give their word,” Velasco added.
Cayetano on Wednesday (September 30) sought to court public sympathy by offering to resign during the plenary session at the House. However, this was rejected by 184 lawmakers in a vote since the chamber was in the middle of passing the 2021 national budget.
Velasco told Cayetano to honor the agreement they made in front of the President as he promised to stick to it despite the Speaker’s “unwillingness” to step down.
“Speaker Cayetano, you gave your word in front of the President to honor the term-sharing agreement.
Please I appeal to you: Finish the budget and resign on October 14,” he said.
