The ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) party is ready to back Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte if he decides to pursue his speakership bid later this month.
PDP Laban Executive Vice President and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales said all existing rivalries in the heavily-contested speakership race will be erased if ever Rep. Duterte was serious in his pronouncement that he might run as House Speaker to finally break the division among members of the House of Representatives.
“Etong objections (ngayon), pag siya (Duterte) ang pumasok sa speakership eh palagay ko, walang lalaban diyan,” said Gonzales.
Gonzales believed that Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco as well as his other fierce rivals for the post, Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, ang Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, will have no choice but to concede to the President’s eldest son if ever he is really serious in leading the Lower House this coming 18th Congress.
“Lahat naman kami. Lahat naman kami kapag si Cong. Pulong… laya yan eh wala ng Cong. Lord, wala ng Cong. Alan… kahit hindi siya PDP Laban,” said Gonzales.
Gonzales said he already discussed the matter to Velasco and the Marinduque solon said he will support Duterte’s bid for the House leadership.
“Nakausap ko na (si Cong. Lord), lahat kami na na kay Cong. Lord, lahat kami susuporta kay Cong. Pulong,” said Gonzales.
“Lahat kami, all the coalition partners, sasama diyan there for Cong. Pulong Duterte,” he added.
Gonzales clarified that the ruling party hasn’t yet to talk with the camp of Duterte but they will definitely rally behind the Davao solon if he already made up his mind to proceed with his pronouncement.
