‘Wag idaan sa palakasan! NUPL: Letting Koko Pimentel off the hook to make public jaded with gov’t

If Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III is not held accountable, people might not follow government measures against the deadly 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19), warned National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) president Edre Olalia.

“If we let this slide, then the public will even be more jaded, cynical, disgusted and frustrated over this hypocrisy, selectivity and favoritism,” he said in a statement.

“Nobody will believe, let alone follow anymore,” Olalia pointed out.

Olalia also disagreed with the response of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra who said that, during abnormal times such as this, “when people are prone to commit mistakes or violations of the law, the DOJ (Department of Justice) will temper the rigor of the law with human compassion.”

Guevarra also said there is no ground yet to order the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe Pimentel who violated measures by visiting the Makati Medical Center last March 24 even though he was supposed to be under self-quarantine.

“It cannot be the law is harsh but it is the law for the poor and powerless and then the law must be tempered with mercy and compassion only for the powerful and privileged,” Olilia said.
