‘Wag niyo takutin si Duterte! Tito Sotto warns Maynilad, Manila Water vs. 100% hike in water rates
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III advised Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Corp. to refrain from warning about raising water rates after the government revoked the extension of their concession agreement.
In a radio interview Saturday (December 14), Sotto said the two water concessionaires should know better by now than to make statements that would anger President Rodrigo Duterte.
“‘Wag niyo tinatakot ang Presidenteng ito. Sa lahat ng presidente natin, ‘wag niyong takutin ang Presidenteng it. The power of the President of the Philippines is vast,” he said.
Sotto noted that Duterte had threatened to file economic sabotage charges against Maynilad and Manila Water officials over the supposed onerous provisions of the concession agreement.
“Kaya nga ‘wag niyo tinatakot ang Presidente dahil babalikan kayo niyan. Ang balik niyan mas mabigat,” he said.
Officials of Maynilad and Manila Water have warned that water rates may more than double after the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System cancelled the extension of their contract until 2037. The agreement is set to expire in 2022.
The water concessionaires argued that they would have to raise water rates to recoup their investments if their contract would end soon.
