Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Thursday (Feb. 13) he has received no order yet to look into the junking of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the United States.
“No,” he replied about queries on such instructions.
It can recalled that Malacanang had ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an impact assessment of the VFA termination aside from studying the legal process.
After the Philippines issued a notice to the US of the VFA termination, Malacanang spokesman Salvador Panelo said President Rodrigo Duterte is looking into doing away with the MDT and EDCA.
However, Guevarra assured that the memo he submitted to Malacanang made no recommendations in junking the MDT and EDCA.
“I mentioned the effect of the termination of the VFA on the EDCA in my memo for the President, but made no recommendation about it (EDCA). After all, it’s practically useless without the VFA,” he said.
“The MDT was also mentioned in our memo, but there was no recommendation about it, as the subject matter of the memo was the VFA only,” he added.
