There may be a new House Speaker when President Rodrigo Duterte delivers his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday afternoon (July 23).
Several sources have confirmed the move to oust incumbent Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez when the third regular session starts at 10 a.m.
Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is widely rumored to replace Alvarez.
A source said the lack of quorum in the super majority bloc’s ongoing caucus is indicative that the plan to oust Alvarez will push through.
Various groups of lawmakers are reportedly holding their own meetings ahead of the opening of the third regular session.
According to another source, a move will be made at the start of the session to elect a new Speaker.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is reportedly behind the move to oust Alvarez after he accused her of being part of the opposition because she formed her own political party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
But most House members are waiting for a clear signal from President Rodrigo Duterte that he wanted Arroyo to replace his long-time buddy Alvarez.
