The Department of Justice (DOJ) has determined that there are 87 persons who should be freed among the 2,221 surrenderers.

Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete disclosed on Saturday (Sept. 28) the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has already processed the papers of 52 of them, while, the rest was just recently verified on Friday (Sept. 27).

“This brings the total number of those to be released as of last night to 87,” he said.

Meanwhile, he assured that the joint task force of the DOJ and BuCor will continue with its verification process and will meet again this Saturday.

“Actual release may be made today,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier ordered those freed because of good conduct time allowance (GCTA) to surrender by September 19 due to concerns that undeserving inmates may have benefited from the GCTA law including heinous crimes convicts.

However, the number off surrenderers exceeded the list of 1,914 freed convicts because of GCTA.
