Former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III doesn’t believe that the ouster of Supreme Court (SC) chief juster Maria Lourdes Sereno was a result of “karma.”
Aquino reacted to perceptions that Sereno got haunted by the ouster of her predecessor, late chief justice Renato Corona.
“Ano kasalanan ni CJ Sereno as far as Corona is concerned?” Aquino told reporters on Monday (June 4).
Corona got impeached back in 2012 over the non-declarations of his properties in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
“Yung mga nadiskubre dun nanggaling sa kanya mismo, sya nagsabi as opposed to iba ang naglabas,” Aquino pointed out.
Last May 11, the SC en banc voted 8-6 to grant the quo warranto petition which sought to nullify her 2012 appointment for failing to submit her SALNs which was part of the requirements set by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).
Sereno had been insisting she did file her SALNs when she still teaching at the University of the Philippines (UP) but had difficulty securing them when she applied as chief justice.
Aquino stressed that under the Constitution impeachable officers like the chief justice can only be removed through impeachment.
“You have to go to Congress, at pag nakagawa ng articles of impeachment trial by the Senate,” he said.
However, because of the quo warranto ruling, Aquino lamented that this power “nadivert sa Padre Faura (SC).”
