Will Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) heed the appeal to extend the installment payment scheme for power consumers?
For Senator Risa Hontiveros, the power utility company can afford to implement such payment mode since it earned billions of pesos last year.
“Tinatayang nasa P21B ang kinita ng Meralco last year sa kabila ng pandemya,” she said.
“Siguro naman, hindi hamak na may kapasidad ang Meralco, ang power suppliers at kanilang mga bangko na i-manage ang problema sa utang kumpara sa pinapasan ng mga konsyumer ngayon,” she said.
Allowing Meralco consumers to pay in installment would actually benefit the power company, according to Hontiveros . Since consumers can settle the bill in installments, they will remain customers of Meralco.
“Kapag pinagpatuloy ang installment basis na pagbabayad, hindi lang maiiwasang maputulan ng kuryente ang mga Pinoy kundi mananatili silang customer ng MERALCO, which will be beneficial in the long run,” she said.
“WALA SILANG LUGI DITO,” she added.
Meralco reportedly started to issue notices of disconnection to consumers who are unable to pay their monthly bills.
