The Senate committee on public services will hold a hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid on February 27.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon announced the date of the hearing Monday (February 17) during the plenary session, after Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri proposed that Joint Resolution 11 filed by Drilon be referred to the Committee on Rules.

Drilon, however, moved for the resolution to be referred to the committee chaired by Senator Grace Poe.

“May I move that Joint Resolution 11 be principally referred to the Committee on Public Services and secondary to the Committee on Rules? Because similar resolutions are now pending in the committee and these concerns the franchise of ABS-CBN. There will be a hearing scheduled on February 27,” the senator said.

Senate Joint Resolution 11 seeks to extend the validity of ABS-CBN’s existing franchise until December 2022, while its franchise application is still pending.

Earlier in the day, Poe said the Senate can hold hearings on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid even if the House of Representatives has yet to tackle bills on the matter as long as the upper chamber doesn’t release a committee report.

Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano earlier said the House is not in a rush to hold hearings on ABS-CBN’s franchise application since emotions are still running high.

Citing a practice observed by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for other companies, Cayetano said ABS-CBN will remain on air even after its franchise expires on March 30.
