We will never be like Singapore! Joy Belmonte blasts P10-M extortion attempt in QC city hall
Quezon City Mayor-elect Joy Belmonte is dismayed with the alleged corruption in the city hall after an extortion attempt on a businessman in exchange of a building permit.
Belmonte revealed on Facebook that the businessman sought her advice when he was asked to pay a P10 million bribe at the Office of the building Official.
“A well-known businessman called me earlier today. He was asked to give a 10M bribe at the Office of the Building Official in exchange for a building permit. Having heard of my reputation as a good governance advocate, he called me to ask for some advice. I told him I would accompany him,” she said.
With her anti-corruption stance, Belmonte said she now knows why majority of City Hall officials did not support me in the last elections.
“Now I also know why we will never be like Singapore, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves that all we need are a couple of fancy buildings, a 1.2B auditorium and an overpriced parking building. As a dear friend used to say: ‘It’s the system, stupid!,'” he said.
