President Rodrigo Duterte would ponder on it, his spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

“Why? Because he doesn’t want to go there and if he’s already there, some US (United States) senators would be unhappy seeing him there because he’s supposed to be number one on the list,” according to him.

In December 2019, a US Senate committee passed a resolution calling on the Philippine government to release Senator Leila de Lima and to drop all charges against her and veteran journalist Maria Ressa.

It also called on US President Donald Trump to “impose sanctions” on government officials involved in the detention of de Lima.

On Thursday, Panelo told reporters that Duterte also expressed concern that he may be denied entry to the United States at the airport.

“Sabi niya, I do not even know if US will issue me a visa. And if I’m issued a visa, I do not know if when I arrive in the States, I would be allowed entry. Oh kaya yun ang sabi niya. Yun ang sagot niya,” he added.
