Wish granted! Duterte plays genie to Diokno with BSP appointment
Analysts may have been surprised with Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno’s appointment as Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), but it’s a dream he’s been holding on for so long.
Politiko learned that Diokno has always wanted to become BSP Governor since he first became Budget Secretary under the Estrada administration.
He didn’t give up hope that he will head the BSP one day even if he was appointed to his old post by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016.
Politiko’s source said Duterte also considered former Finance Secretary Jesus Estanislao to become BSP Governor, but chose Diokno in the end.
If there’s one politiko unhappy with Diokno’s promotion to the BSP, that would be House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who had wanted her Trade Secretary, Peter Favila, to be at the Central Bank’s helm.
Favila, who’s currently a member of the Monetary Board, had been floated as a possible successor of former BSP Governor Amando Tetangco after his retirement in 2017, but lost the post to Nestor Espenilla Jr.
Diokno will serve the unexpired term of the late BSP Governor Espenilla, who was supposed to end his stint in July 2023.
