Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice boasted that the Liberal Party (LP) has a deep bench for senator in the 2016 elections.
In fact, the sheer number of people to choose from is causing the administration party a headache, Erice said.
“Sixteen na ang aming possibleng candidate kaya medyo masakit sa ulo dahil 12 lang ang kailangan,” Erice said.
Erice did not hesitate to take a swipe against other parties, which he said is having a difficult time to court candidates for senator.
“Yung iba medyo hirap daw yata sa pagbuo ng kanilang line-up,” Erice said.
Among the candidates for senator under LP are Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, Internal Revenue chief Kim Henares, Metro Manila Development Authority chair Francis Tolentino, Quezon city mayor Herbert Bautista, Manila vice mayor Isko Moreno, former Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla, PhilHealth director Risa Hontiveros Las Pinas Rep. Mark Villar, and Mark Lapid, son of Sen. Lito Lapid.
Five others are reelectionists – Senate President Franklin Drilon, and senators Ralph Recto and TG Guingona, and former senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan and Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
Meanwhile, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of Vice President Jejomar Binay is looking at fielding as senators Sulu Princess Jacel Kiram and actress Paranaque councilor Alma Moreno.
Expected to run as senators under the banner of Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero are Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) chief Joel Villanueva, Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian, Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Taguig Rep. Lino Cayetano and Atty. Lorna Kapunan, who lawyered for pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles.
