Yayamanin! Bilyonaryo Villar richest in Senate with P3B
By Xave Gregorio
Senator Cynthia Villar maintained her position as the richest in the upper chamber, with her net worth rising by around P5.2 million last year from P3.61 billion in 2016, her latest statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) showed.
Villar’s net worth rose to P3.61 billion as of December 2017, according to her latest SALN obtained by Senate reporters.
The senator, who chairs the Senate agrarian reform agriculture and food, and environmental and natural resources committees, also has no liabilities.
Bulk of her assets come from investments from shares of stock, amounting to almost P2.3 billion, and her other real and personal properties, which total to around P1.4 billion.
In her SALN, Villar declared that she is a shareholder of Las Piñas-based companies Fine Properties, Inc., M.B. Villar Company, Inc., Macy’s, Inc., Mooncrest Property Development Corp., Hollinger Holdings Corp., and Vistaland and Lifescapes, Inc.
However, she did not declare how many shares she has invested in the six companies.
All companies, except Hollinger Holdings, are connected to the Villar family and their businesses.
Villar came under fire at the height of talks of Boracay’s closure, when it was revealed that her family’s Vistaland and Lifescapes has two properties in the island destination.
Amid her opposition to Boracay’s shutdown, she was criticized for supposedly having a conflict of interest in the issue, as she was then conducting Senate inquiries as chair of the environmental and natural resources committee.
Joining the Senate bilyonaryo club with Villar is Senator Manny Pacquiao, who is worth P2.5 billion as of December 2017.
Pacquiao, however, is one of the Senate’s biggest loser, with his net worth down by P126 million from P3 billion in 2016.
But this only represents a four percent loss, which is lower compared to the 6.96 percent decline suffered by Senator Risa Hontiveros, whose net worth plunged to P15.2 million from P16.3 million.
